Musician Puts Talent to Good Use

For musician Michael “Mick” Beaman, being diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease almost 10 years ago was a life-changing experience.

“It opened my eyes to a whole new world,” said Beaman. “How we treat the ones who love us, that’s what’s important.”

Beaman played his third concert at the Glass Onion Cafe, 1990 W. River Road, Sunday.

The first and third shows were to raise both awareness and funding for Team Fox, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The second was for another fundraiser he was asked to play.

After falling into depression following his diagnosis, Beaman, now 40, pulled himself together and decided to put his lifelong love of music to good use.

“I just try to do what I can,” said Beaman. “I believe I’ve been given a small talent, and I spread the word any way I can. Every time I play, 100 percent of every penny I make goes to Team Fox. I just believe in doing the next right thing.”

His voice and guitar commanded the attention of cafe patrons and family friends for about two hours as he played cover songs and originals.

Beaman performs about every other month, but would like to play more.

“If I could get out there and play every day in a different venue, I would,” he said.

In the meantime, he deals with the disease on a day-by-day basis, taking medication every four to six hours. During a short break between sets, Beaman got hugs from his children and a kiss from his girlfriend, Barbara Kohl.

“An excellent support system is the best thing you can have, and I have that. I’m very blessed,” said Beaman.

Tip of the Day

So your fundraiser has come and gone and it’s too early to start planning the small details for next year, what can you do to still stay involved?

  1. Look into researching potential local sponsors. With ample time on your hands before your next event, take the opportunity to research roping in some local businesses whose inclusion might take a few months to coordinate. Think about businesses that you could ask to match your final fundraising total or, if you’re a successful, seasoned veteran, maybe you could think about finding a business to commit to an annual giving agreement. Local sponsorship is a great way to increase your fundraising potential, so don’t be afraid to get a head start!
  2. Think about setting up a Web site. Not only are Web sites a great way to transmit information about upcoming event details, but they are an awesome tool for allowing interested donors/volunteers to have constant access to resources and information. Include links to your Team Fox homepage, post PR related materials (flyers, videos, photos), and as you get closer to the event date don’t forget to update with event information!
  3. Create a brochure or PR packet. Having some sort of material that you can distribute when approaching potential sponsors or contacting local news groups (TV, newspapers, radio, etc) is a great way to allow organizations and individuals to not only have a record of your fundraising efforts, but also as a way to allow them to further look into your event after your initial meeting/proposal. Additionally, be sure to add space on your brochure template where you can add upcoming event details as you get closer to the date- having a brochure to distribute at your local supermarkets, doctor’s offices, or schools prior to your event date is a great advertising strategy.

What do you do during your fundraising “off-season”? Leave us a message in the comment section. Have a great weekend!
