Thanks to a chance meeting while both of them were out jogging last year, two former Wilton High students have joined to run in the upcoming New York City Marathon for Team Fox.

Dayna De Simone and Caitlin Peters, who played field hockey together at WHS, are running to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The marathon takes place on Nov. 1.

“I was inspired to join Team Fox due to my grandfather’s battle with Parkinson’s disease,” said De Simone, a 1998 Wilton High graduate. “Although he passed away in 2005, I feel my involvement and help in fund raising can help other families not have to experience what mine did. We are so close to finding a cure. It’s just a matter of funding and resources to make it possible.”

De Simone ran the 2008 New York City Marathon for Team Fox and raised nearly $3,000.

“It was an incredibly rewarding experience for me, both personally and emotionally. Running through the streets of New York and hearing people cheer for Team Fox and the greater Michael J. Fox Foundation was an experience I will never forget,” said De Simone.

“I am excited to run again this year, and am excited to have Caitlin Peters as my partner.”

Last summer, De Simone and Peters were both out jogging in the street when they crossed paths. Peters, a 1997 WHS grad, was training for a race, and after the two reconnected, joined De Simone on Team Fox.

So far, both women have raised close to $3,000 each.

“We are both really excited to be a part of this,” said De Simone. “We are both hoping to raise much more before race day on Nov. 1.”

Anyone interested in supporting their efforts may go their individual Web pages by visiting the Team Fox Web site, www.teamfox.org, and searching for either of their names.
