Alone In Her Fight, For Now

Hopefully you were able to see some of the Michael J. Fox special on optimism Thursday night on KSFY.

A Brandon woman is taking his message of hope to heart as she works to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease research.

Right now she is alone in her fight, but hopefully not for long.

We caught up with Sarah Rasmussen at University Center where she works as a student services coordinator.

That’s when she told us that….for now…she’s one of a kind. “I’m the only member of Team Fox in South Dakota.”

“Team Fox” is the grass roots fundraising and education arm of the Michael J Fox Foundation.

And Sarah’s story is personal: her father has Parkinson’s and any work she has help do for others, she is also doing for him. “He really just sees it as part of who he is now.”

And Sarah told us part of everyone coming to terms with her dad’s illness has involved humor…and the jokes started….with Dad. “He says he’s just like james bond, he’s shaken not stirred.”

All humor aside, Sarah says her message is the same as Michael J. Fox’s, that if people stay positive and work towards a cure…and the financing it will take to develop a cure..the disease will be defeated.

Sarah is working on a golf tourney fundraiser to be held next month at the Brandon Valley Golf Course…it’s her way of helping the cause, and her dad…”You don’t have to be great at golf, it’s a best ball tourney, you just have to like being out there..”

If you live in South Dakota, join Sarah in her efforts!
